I used to believe assigning a set of values to an organization was more fluff than substance until two things happened:
1) We began creating proposals for potential new clients and…
2) We began to hire people. Only then did I become fully aware of the significance of knowing what it is you wholeheartedly value as a company and how to properly communicate that to two audiences that greatly impact your business––your future clients and your employees.
My take ’em or leave ’em attitude towards values stemmed from seeing countless companies touting similar, vanilla and somewhat shallow ones such as “Integrity”, “Teamwork” and “Innovation”. Haven’t we all worked for this company?
Exactly my point.
Values, in order to really do something for your business, must be outrageously truthful and unapologetically authentic to you and only you. Amalgamated’s values, for example, not only help define our internal culture, but also set us apart from the many other food brokerages that populate our industry. We value HUSTLE, DETERMINATION, AMBITION, GUTS, POSITIVITY, BOLDNESS, INTELLIGENCE, DYNAMIC THINKING, CREATIVITY + GRIT. These values represent who we are individually and also as a whole.
Of all of our company values, my favorite is Grit. It is such an underused word and yet an extremely powerful one, as the very definition encompasses passion, interest, purpose, perseverance, practice and hope. We are a sales organization, after all, and selling just cannot exist without good dose of Grit.
